It's a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service that transmits to subscribers in the U.S. March 1996 marked the launch of the satellite TV broadcaster, which is owned by the parent company DISH Network Corporation. It's a public company with approximately 22,000 employees. The company is a registered Nevada corporation based in Englewood, Colorado.

Along with DirectTV, DISH Network provides interactive television services and audio programming in competition with cable television providers across the nation. For 28 years the company has achieved many notable ground-breaking advances in technology.

In 1987, as EchoStar Communications Corporation, the company filed for a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) license with the FCC, since it envisioned the evolution of technology in the satellite TV industry. In total it has launched 14 satellites with the ability to provide more than 2,700 digital video, data and audio channels for programming. The programming includes HDTV and local channels. After DISH Network and EchoStar separated, the company retained control over six  satellites; five are owned and one is leased.
